3 Types of Books Every Young Person Should Read

Reading has countless benefits to young people, be it an increase in knowledge, development of emotional and cognitive skills, vocabulary improvement, or reduced stress levels. Reading will get you a long way. Parents should encourage their kids to develop the habit of reading from an early age.

Here is a list of three types of books that every young person should read, not just for pleasure but also for valuable insights about the world and life in general.

Classic Books

Classics are timeless and are seen as the most high-brow preference in literature. They have been read and acknowledged by critics and the masses alike and have great influence over people. British classics are especially in a league of their own. The first editions of classic books are usually sold at private auctions and are worth thousands of dollars.

Every young person should read at least a few pieces of classic literature. Some must-read classics include Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Lord of the Flies by William Gold, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, and more.

Slice Of Life Books

Slice of life is a sub-genre of the young adult (YA) category, but while YA might include everything fictional from vampires to werewolves and witches, the slice of life genre takes a more relatable and realistic approach to fiction. These books are usually based on young people's everyday lives and their experiences, including friendships, bullying, drugs, sexual awakenings, etc. They provide valuable insight for young people.

Some recommendations of slice of life books are The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Paper Towns by John Green, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, and more.

Self-Help Books

Self-help books might not seem very appropriate for young people, but they can definitely be useful. There's never too much knowledge that you can gain, and self-help books can act as guides for those who are struggling or might be helpful in the future. Some brilliant self-help books of all time include The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey, among others.
